What does internationalization mean?

Internationalization (i18n) is the process of pre-adjusting "whether linguistic or technological" of software, a manual or a website intended for use in a foreign market.

This process consists of modifying source codes and other 'sensitive'� elements so that when the product is linguistically adapted for use in a foreign country or translated, minimal technological difficulties are encountered.
